Mobile Topographer Pro is a professional surveying application that brings many of the tools of a traditional survey workstation to an Android device. It focuses on accurate point collection, rich coordinate conversions, and advanced data export, with a Pro feature set built for serious field work.
It is best suited to professional surveyors and users who need reliable tools to mark and analyze property boundaries, record routes, and work with GIS data.
Survey toolkit aimed at professionals
Mobile Topographer Pro builds on the free edition by adding a broad range of capabilities that clearly target professional workflows. You can collect points, view them on embedded Google maps, calculate areas, convert coordinates between geodetic and cartesian formats, and save multiple point lists.
The Pro version adds more advanced options such as real time map projection while surveying, device elevation, and auto survey mode. You can also perform a complete survey directly on the map, inserting, moving, or deleting points without visiting the site, or using this mode to correct and extend existing surveys.
Data handling and GIS integration
One of the strongest aspects of Mobile Topographer Pro is its import and export support. The app allows you to:
- Import points from files in WGS84 or another coordinate reference system
- Read data from text files (.txt, .csv) and GIS Shape files (.shp)
- Export points and results to .txt, .csv, .kml, .gpx, .dxf, and .shp
For GIS users, Shape file compatibility in both directions is a major advantage, since it fits directly into common desktop mapping workflows. You can send these files by email or upload them to cloud storage from within the app.
Point organization is also well covered. You can group points, filter the point list by group name, and export only selected groups or attributes. This makes it easier to manage large surveys where boundaries, control points, and auxiliary points need to remain clearly separated.
Terrain modeling, contours, and visualization
The Pro edition introduces full 3D terrain modeling and contour generation. You can collect terrain data, build a 3D model, and derive contour lines, then display these contours directly on the map. The terrain models and contour sets can be saved and exported for further analysis.
Performance of these tools has improved over time. Recent versions use a faster calculation algorithm, so contour lines are generated noticeably more quickly, which benefits users who rely on the app for terrain interpretation in the field.
Field surveys, editing, and route tracking
Mobile Topographer Pro offers several functions designed for daily field work:
- Route tracking, including logging your path, processing the route, viewing statistics, showing it on the map, and exporting it
- Calculation of area, perimeter, and number of vertices for polygons
- Manual coordinate editing, where you can key in coordinates or adjust a point by repositioning it on the map
The “Drive me” feature lets you enter target coordinates or pick an existing point, then follow a pointer along with a compass that indicates both magnetic and true north. This is helpful when navigating to stations or property corners you have previously stored.
Accuracy tools, coordinates, and GNSS support
Accuracy control is a central theme in Mobile Topographer Pro. The app supports:
- Weighted averaging on each axis to refine GPS positions
- Map calibration and device calibration either on the map or on a known point
- Height calculation as both ellipsoidal height and EGM96 orthometric height
You can convert coordinates between geodetic and cartesian formats, using either points measured with the device or values entered manually. A wide range of coordinate systems is available, including UTM, several European and national grids, SPCS83 zones in the USA, Canadian CSRS systems, and systems for countries such as Brazil, Argentina, India, Australia, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, and more. Units can be switched between meters, international feet, and US survey feet.
GNSS support is extensive. The app can show a satellite sky view, with signal strength and satellite counts for each constellation, and it works with GPS, GLONASS, QZSS, BEIDOU, and GALILEO. You can monitor satellites in an augmented reality view while surveying, which provides an intuitive sense of satellite geometry around you. For higher precision work, the app can connect to an external GPS receiver, and users report using it with Bluetooth RTK receivers for improved accuracy.
Offline capability and reliability
Mobile Topographer Pro is fully functional without an internet connection, which suits remote areas where data coverage is limited. Maps, point lists, terrain models, and routes can all be handled offline, then exported or shared once you return to connectivity.
A side panel gives quick access to satellite information while surveying, and the app includes complete help text support. This documentation helps users understand the many tools provided and how they fit together in real-world survey tasks.
Performance has also benefited from ongoing development. Issues reported in earlier versions, particularly around contour processing speed, have been addressed, and the app now calculates contours much more rapidly. This kind of iterative improvement reinforces its suitability for professional use.
Areas where it could go further
While the Pro feature set is quite rich, some advanced needs remain partially covered. Currently, orthometric heights use the EGM96 geoid. Users who rely on very high precision, especially those working with RTK receivers, would benefit from the option to choose other geoid models, such as EGM2008, inside the app.
Similarly, contour interval settings are limited. For many professional applications, the ability to set contour intervals below 1 meter, for example down to about 20 centimeters, would offer a more detailed view of terrain where elevation changes are subtle. Providing more granular control over contour spacing would make the existing 3D modeling tools even more attractive for high accuracy projects.
Overall, Mobile Topographer Pro delivers a strong mix of survey, mapping, and GIS functions on Android, particularly for professionals who need robust import/export options, coordinate system support, and solid control over positional accuracy.
